Abstract

This chapter highlights mitochondria's central role in eukaryotic cells for energy production via aerobic respiration, synthesizing ATP. Additionally, mitochondria contribute to lipid metabolism, calcium signaling, and ROS production. Mitophagy is crucial for maintaining homeostasis by degrading damaged mitochondria, with its four stages detailed. The link between mitochondrial damage and diseases is explored, along with the significance of mitophagy in cancer cells and potential treatments. This chapter provides insight into mitochondria's biological significance and their role in disease pathogenesis. © 2025 by IGI Global Scientific Publishing. All rights reserved.
