Abstract
ABSTRACT In nuclear medicine, one of the most important problems in me qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the gamma camera studies is the radiation attenuation which occurs in the tissues located between the organs of interest and the detector. This problem was investigated by two experimental attenuation studies. In the first study, linear absorbtion coefficients of the organic substances of fat, water, muscle and bone was experimentally measured by gamma radiation sources,' ^Tc/^I and ''Cs. Results obtained were found in a good correlation with the literature. in the second study, SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) studies were made by using the second peak of 201jj ^57 j^y) m a iesser abundance to increase the counting statistics hence improving the imaging quality, in addition to the energy peak (2'*T1) used for routine imaging of the radioisotope. When two energy peaks were employed together in there tomographic studies made by the SPECT performance PHANTOM, in aggreement with literature, compared to the classical single peak imaging the counts were 43.7±.6.4 % higher without attenuation media and, 43.2±2.6 %, 37±4.2 % and 44.£t7.4 at the thicknesses of 1 cm, 2 cm and 3 cm respectively. Positive effects of this increment on the image quality was shown by visual interpretation, lesion contrast and counting statistics.
