Abstract
In this study, the effect of using the hormone 17 α-methyltestosterone on guppy(Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1860) fish on formation of color and reproduction wereinvestigated. This study includes 3 steps and lasted 12 weeks. In the first step, the effect ofhormone on formation of color and changing of sex of fish, in the second step the effectof hormone on color and sexuality and the last step the effect of that hormone onreproduction of fish were investigated. The 17 α-methyltestosterone hormone wasadded into both water and feed of fish. The determination of visual color was made bypanalist. In the first step, any changes were not observed in the color group. In the group inaquarium in which the hormone was added into the water (S1, S2, S3) during the thirdweek (21th day) formation of orange color was observed but in the group aquarium instarting of which the hormone was added into the feed (Y1, Y2, Y3) the lighter orangecolor than that of the S group was observed. In the fourth week (28th day) the formationof red color in the S and Y groups, the similarities of this colors between the Y2 and Sgroups and the formation of lighter red color in the Y1 and Y3 groups were determined. The formation of coloration was observed especially in tail handle, back fin and analfin of fish.In the second step of this study no changes were observer in the control group.Although hormone was not used in the S and Y groups though first week (7th day) theincrease of color and though the following weeks no change of this color wereobserved. In the first and second steps of S and Y groups, the formation of gonopodiumin 8 female guppy fish in total was observed .In the third step of control group in aquarium 18 juvenile fish in total wereobtained. As a result, 17 α-methyltestosterone causes the increase of pigmentation andeffects the changing of sex and reproduction of guppies.Key Words : Guppy fish, color, pigmentation, changing of sex, reproduction
