Abstract
The aim of this study is to improve experimental activities on diffusion in liquid, comparing the laboratory method which is applied with experimental activities and classical teaching method and also to investigate the influence of the experimental activities on the teaching of diffusion and diffusion related concepts in science education. The study includes 108 first year students attending the department of primary school science programme in Ondokuz Mayıs University in 2008-2009. Semi-experimental method was used in the study. There were randomly chosen 108 students in the study, 56 of whom were in the study group and 52 of whom were in the control group. ?Test of Basic Concepts relevant to Diffusion?, ?Test of Basic Statistics Knowledge?, ?Test of Diffusion in Liquids? were applied to the groups as pre test and post test. Following the pre test, we had the study group do the experiment of diffusion in the liquids prepared in the laboratory setting. Both groups were informed about the tests. Following the laboratory study, ?Study Group Worksheet Test? and ?Test of the Students Thoughts about the New Experimental Method? was applied to the study group. The results were analysed via SPSS 15.0 package programme. In conclusion it has been found out that four new experimental activities were developed, laboratory-guided education is more influential than the classical education method on diffusion education in liquid and it is useful in basic statistics education. It has been concluded that laboratory method can be used in teaching diffusion and the diffusion related concepts, proving the Graham Diffusion Law, teaching the concept of dissolution, teaching the concept of hydrated particle and teaching the features of ideal gas-real gas. It has been thought experimental activities are used in primary, secondary and high level in chemical education.Key Words: Science education, chemical education, laboratory-guided education, classical teaching method, diffusion in liquid, hydrated particle, ideal gas, real gas.
