Abstract
In this work, sodium 2-mercaptonicotinate and it?s transition metal complexes of Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) were synthesized and their spectroscopic properties were investigated by UV-Vis and IR techniques. Sodium 2-mercaptonicotinate was synthesized by the notralization of 2- mercaptonicotinic acid with sodium hydroxide in 1:1 mole ratio and it?s sutructure has been characaterized by H1NMR, IR and thermal analysis techniques. All the complexes were obtained by mixing aqueous solutions of metal chlorides and sodium 2- mercaptonicotinate in 1:2 mole ratio. The experimental magnetic moments of the complexes have been calculated from the magnetic susceptibility measurements and it has found that Zn(II), Cd(II), Hg(II) complexes were diamagnetic while the others were paramagnetic, high-spin complexes. The stoichiometries of the complexes were invesitigated by elemental analysis and mole ratio of metal to ligand was found to be 1:2 for all the complexes. Thermal behaviour of the complexes in nitrogen atmosphere was simultaneously investigated by TG, DTG and DTA techniques. By using the corresponding DTGmax values of 2-mercaptonicotinate decomposition stages the sequence of thermal stability of the complexes was found to be Mn(II) < Cu(II) = Hg(II) < Cd(II) < Zn(II) < Ni(II) < Co(II). The decomposition of the complexes at high temperature, the final products that correspond to the complexes of Mn(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) were assigned as metal oxides whereas no products were found for the other complexes. In view of elemental analysis, UV-Vis and IR studies, it is proposed that all the complexes are tetrahedral geometry. On the spectra of complexes, according to the frequency shifts belonging to distinctive thioamide and carbonyl vibrations, in the Hg(II) complex it is suggested that the ligant coordinates to the metal centre as a bidentate ligand via oxygen atom of carboxilate group and sulphur atom of thiol group whereas it coordinates as a bidentate ligand via oxygen atoms of carboxilate group in the other complexes. Conductivity measurements of the complexes at the concentration of 10-3 M in DMSO show that all the complexes are non-electrolyte. Key Words: 2-Mercaptonicotinic acid; Heterocyclic thioamides; Spectroscopy; Thermal analysis; Tautomerism.
