Abstract
In this survey, the relationships between the visuals used in Secondary school science course books and the text that they concerned has been investigated as form an content; its cover, photography an iconography in terms of their weak and strong aspects. The visuals used in Science a course book that constitutes the sample has been classified, and the density of usage has been determined, and the relationship between each visual and the text, and plastic problems have been investigated. In the surveys; it has been noted that the visual used in course books examined before; however those course books were largely belonging to Turkish and Social Sciences course books. In this case it is considered that the survey will fill the gap in this field. In the majority of the science course books examined in the survey; it has been stated that the quality of printing of iconography was poor, that the iconography was used less than photography although it is known that it is more useful to use iconography. The usage of the caricatures which is considered to contribute great benefits is not seen to be used in three course books except for few applications. Moreover; it has been noted that the visual unity between the visual elements and the pages could not be maintained, most of the iconography has major anatomic errors, most of it had no relation with the text or were not able to express the information given. Besides, it has been observed that in some of the visuals which are used were chosen without paying attention to the cultural structure, socio-cultural environment and the life-style of the target group they belonged to. One other significant determination is that one common drawing language could not be established and because of this the visual harmony could not be achieved.
