Giresun Müzesi’nde Bulunan Pişmiş Toprak Kandiller
Abstract
In this study, 14 terrecota lamps brought to the museum by means ofconfiscation or transfer were examined in Giresun Museum inventory. The lamps divided intotwo groups, Hellenistic and Roman periods, also grouped under separate types in themselves. In this context, while there were six types of lamps dated back to Hellenistic period, theRoman period artifacts were examined under four types. Since the lamps with unknownfinding location were not localized, they were tried to date through comparison with theexisting lamp catalogs rather than its layer of finding location. At the end of the study, 7 ofthe lamps were dated to the Hellenistic period, and 7 of them were dated to Roman period. These data obtained were obtained as a result of comparison of form, dough and liningproperties of similar lamps. No excavations were carried out in the region except excavationsin Giresun Island. There were no lamps found in the excavations carried out in GiresunIsland, where the remains of the present day were dated to the Middle Ages. New excavationsand findings to be carried out in the region in the future will undoubtedly shed light on thearcheology of the region. Moreover, future studies will allow determination of lampworkshops and their interaction with neighboring cultures.
