Abstract
THE ACUTE AND CHRONIC EFFECTS OF SMOKING ON THE OCULAR BLOOD FLOW ABSTRACT Purpose: To report the acute and chronic effects of cigarette smoking on the ocular blood flow. Material and Method: This study was made on Ondokuz Mayıs University, Faculty of Medicine Ophthalmology and Radiology Departments between June 2000 and January 2001. Twenty four smokers (20 males,4 fameles) and 28 nonsmokers (20 males 8 fameles ) total of 52 volunteer subjects were studied. Colour doppler imaging was used to measure the systolic and diastolic flow velocity of the ophthalmic artery, central retinal artery and posterior ciliary artery in both smoker and nonsmoker volunteers. Six hours after no smoking period and just after smoking measurements were taken in smokers group. Heart rate, intraocular pressure and brachial artery blood pressure in the sitting position were measured before and after smoking. Results : After 6 hours of non smoking period, avarage central retinal artery flow velocity was 8.8+2.9 cm/min in 24 smokers and 10.3+2.3 cm/min in nonsmokers (p<0.05). After 6 hours of non smoking period for smokers group and in the nonsmokers group ophthalmic artery blood flow velocity was found to be 34.03 cm/min, 33.7 cm/min respectively. Whereas the measured value immidiately after one cigarette smoking was found to be singnificantly higher (41.5 cm/min) (p<0. 01). Conclucion: The result indicates that, cigarette smoking reduces ocular blood flow as results of chronic effect, on the other hand acute smoking temporarly increases ocular blood flow. Key Words: Ocular Blood Flow, Smoking, Color Doppler Imaging IV
