Abstract

This study presents a frequency reconfigurable coplanar wave-guide antenna design for S/C bands satellite applications. Characteristic modes are analysed to design a coplanar antenna structure that improves bandwidths over the proposed spectrum. The antenna uses the Rogers RT5880 substrate with a thickness of 0.508 mm and has two slotted rectangular copper radiating elements at the center and top-end of the patch antenna layer. Frequency reconfiguration is achieved by using two PIN diodes placed on the patch layer to switch the resonance frequency of the proposed antenna. The proposed antenna operates over four different frequency modes of 3.90 GHz, 4.2 GHz, 4.42 GHz, and 4.82 GHz with a reflection coefficient below -10 dB, depending on the active and inactive states of the PIN diodes. The proposed antenna also has a bidirectional radiation pattern with 360° of beam steering, and a high gain of 4.5 dBi is achieved over 4.2 GHz frequency. The antenna has the highest efficiency of 0.99 over 4.82 GHz. © 2023 IEEE.
