Abstract
Heavy metal pollution is an important environmental problem that arises mostly from industrial activities. Removal of heavy metals is provided by methods such as membrane filtration, ion exchange, chemical precipitation and electrochemical method, adsorption. In this study; the adsorption of copper and zinc ions on calcium alginate micro spheres was investigated. The effects of parameters such as pH, temperature, contact time, initial concentration and dosage on the recovery efficiency and adsorption capacity of these heavy metals have been investigated. Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Raduskevich isotherm models have been tried. Dubinin-Radushkevich's adsorption of copper ions and Temkin's isotherm model of adsorption of zinc ions. Pseudo first and pseudo second order kinetic models, Elovich and intra-particle diffusion kinetic models have been studied. It has been found that the adsorption kinetics of both copper and zinc ions are appropriate for pseudo-second-order kinetic models. With the Van't Hoff equation, the ΔH ° standard enthalpy change for adsorption of copper ions is 30.58 kJ/mol, ΔS ° standard entropy change is 0.10 kJ /(mol K) and the ΔH ° standard enthalpy change for adsorption of zinc ions is 5.47 kJ /mol and ΔS ° standard entropy change was calculated as 0.01 kJ / (mol K). As a result; the desire of copper ions to attach to the calcium alginate micro spheres' surface is much larger than that of zinc ions. Key Words: Alginate, removal of heavy metals, adsorption, micro sphere
