Abstract
ABSTRACT DETERMINATION OF USABILITY OF JUVENILITY GRAFTING METHODS ON GRAFTED NURSERY TREE PRODUCTION IN CHESTNUT The objective of this study was to determine the effects of juvenility grafting methods on potted nursery tree production in chestnut. The study was carried out under nursery greenhouse conditions during 2002-2003. In the study, newly germinated chestnut seeds and young seedlings of SA 5-1 genotypes were used as rootstock and scion with dormant buds for same genotypes were used as scion materials. Five grafting methods were applied, namely, nursery seed grafting, inverted radicil grafting, split hypocotyl grafting, wedge grafting on epicotyl and chip budding on epicotyl. Graftings were done for three periods from April to June in 2003. Graft success and seedling development were investigated in order to determine the suitable method and time of In the study, successful results were obtained from all the grafting methods except nursery seed grafting. However, the best graft success was obtained from inverted radicil grafting method made for first period (10-11 April). In this grafting method and period, grafting take, sprouting and survival ratios were 84.9 %, 83.6 % and 82.4 %, respectively. Graft shoot height and diameter were also 16.7 cm and 3.9 mm, respectively for this grafting method and period. Key words: chestnut, juvenility grafts, nursery seed grafting, inverted radicil grafting, split hypocotyl grafting, epicotyl graftins, graft success
