Abstract
ABSTRACT VALUES EDUCATION IN THE STORIES OF GUY DE MAUPASSANT IN THE CONTEXT OF THE SCHWARTZ MODEL AND ITS PLACE IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING Remzi DEMIR Ondokuz Mayıs University Graduate School of Education Department of Foreign Language Education Department of French Language Education Master, SEPTEMBER/2024 Advisor: Prof. Dr. Hanife Nalan GENÇ The primary aim of this thesis is to evaluate the concept of values education in semantic, educational, affective and literary dimensions and to find out how and in what way it is reflected in the stories of the French writer Guy de Maupassant. Descriptive analysis was used as a research method in the thesis. To the biological needs of the individual, social needs, including the need for communication and interaction, and needs arising from the desire to be in a group and arising from social requirements are added. Schwartz structured these three basic needs, which have a universal nature, into ten value types, in terms of being similar or different from each other, motivational, dynamic and continuity. Twenty-eight stories selected from Maupassant's seven books were evaluated according to ten basic value types around these three basic universal needs of the individual. Stories that appear to contain one or more of these values are classified according to their compatibility and contrast. Another aim of the thesis is to find out the place of values education in foreign language learning/teaching. While learning a foreign language, not only the structural side of the language but also its culture and values are learned. In basic and/or auxiliary foreign language teaching books, attention is drawn to the place and importance of values education in the learning and teaching of activities and subjects. It has been determined that values are transferred directly or indirectly in the stories selected from Guy de Maupassant. It has been observed that the author includes the concepts of benevolence and security more in his selected stories than in others. It has been concluded that the values conveyed in Maupassant's stories will be beneficial in foreign language learning/teaching as they both motivate the student educationally and direct them to question. Key Words: Guy de Maupassant, Schwartz, values education, story, foreign language.
