Lozan Konferansı Sürecinde Türkiye-İngiltere İlişkilerinin İngiliz Basınına Yansımaları

Abstract

Lozan Konferansı'nın, Yakın Doğu'da yüzyıllardır süre gelen anlaşmazlıklara nokta koyması ve Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devleti'nin varlığının büyük güçler tarafından resmen tanınması bağlamında gerek dünya tarihi gerekse Türkiye Cumhuriyeti tarihi açısından önemi büyüktür. Tarihsel süreçteki Türk-İngiliz ilişkilerinin devamı olarak, konferans boyunca, İngiltere ile Türkiye'nin büyük bir rekabet içinde oldukları görülmektedir. Türkiye'nin, Misak-ı Milli'yi elde etme sürecinde, Lozan Konferansı boyunca karşılaştığı en büyük güçlük, İngiltere'nin müttefikleri ile oluşturduğu birleşik cephe karşısında izleyeceği denge politikasını sürdürmeye çalışması olmuştur. Bu süreçte, Türkiye'nin en büyük avantajı, müttefiklerin çıkarlarının da zaman zaman çatışmasıdır. Bu Yüksek Lisans tezinde, Türk-İngiliz rekabetinin en iyi şekilde anlaşılabilmesi ve rekabet noktalarının tespit edilebilmesi amacıyla, Lozan Konferansı boyunca İngiliz basınında yer alan haberler incelenmiş, böylelikle konferansın kamuoyuna ne şekilde yansıtıldığı tespit edilmiştir. Bu tespiti yapmak için, internet ortamında The Times, The Manchester Guardian ve Observer gazetelerinin arşivleri taranmış ve konu ile ilgili haberler değerlendirilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın sonunda, Lozan Konferansı boyunca İngiltere'nin konferansı en çok etkileyen, hatta konferansın seyrine yön veren taraf olduğu görülmüştür. Lausanne Conference is a cornerstone both in the history of the world and The Turkish Republic in that it not only ended disputes of centuries in the Near East but also documented the recognition of the new Turkish Republic by the Great Powers. It was evident that Turkey and Britain were competing parties during the entire conference, which was only a continuation of the history of the Turkish-British relations. The biggest problem Turkey encountered in order to achieve its National Pact was that it had to sustain a balance between Britain and its allies. The biggest advantage of Turkey in this process, however, was that the interests of the Allies conflicted with each other at times. In this post-graduate thesis, news published in the British Press during the Lausanne Conference was examined in order to enable a better understanding of the Turkish-British competition and subjects of this competition. Thus, the reflection of the Conference on the public was revealed. To this end, the archives of The Times, The Manchester Guardian and The Observer were reviewed on the Internet and relevant news was evaluated. In conclusion, it was observed that Britain was the most effective, even the leading, party in the Conference.
