Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate shooting and archery activities as sports in the Seljuk Turks. A literature review was made. Archery shooting took its place as a common activity during the Seljuk period. A book about arrow shooting has been written. The figure of an eagle stretching a bow was used in the flag of the Seljuks. Archery and shooting activities were used for recreational purposes other than war. Shooting arrows at the pumpkin is one of them. The archery skills of the Seljuk Sultans are depicted on the coins. Bow and arrow making has also become an important profession. Conclusion: Under the influence of Central Asian traditions and Islam, shooting and archery gained a new identity in the Seljuk Turks. The Seljuk Turks developed archery activities and showed their skills in using arrows and bows on horseback. Archery took its place in hunting, sports, and entertainment by gaining not only military and political meaning but also a social and cultural one in the Seljuks. The tradition of shooting and archery in the Seljuks was transferred to the Ottomans and has survived to the present day. We can say that the foundations for the establishment of "Arrow Squares" and "Arrow Square Lodges/ Lodges" for archery during the Ottoman Empire and making archery an institution were laid during the Seljuk period. It is suggested that shooting and archery activities that have been around since the Seljuk era should be investigated in more depth. © 2024 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
