Abstract
In this study, some biological features and sagittal otolith morphology and morphometry of Caucasian Goby, Ponticola constructor (Nordmann, 1840), inhabiting Terme Stream (Samsun, Turkey) were examined. Fish were collected between June 2015 and August 2016. The specimens were caught using an electro-shocker. The samples were measured to the nearest 0.01 mm for total and standard lengths and their weights were weighed to the nearest 0.01 g. Sex was determined from gonads. The sagittal otoliths were removed, cleaned, and stored dry. Otolith weights were recorded to the nearest 0.0001 g. All otoliths were photographed on both distal and proximal side. The length, height, perimeter, and area of each otolith were measured. The power model was used to describe the relationships between otolith variables and size and weight of fish. The mean percent prediction error value for each relationship was calculated. Six different otolith shape indices were used to identify the otolith morphological characteristics. A total of 232 specimens were captured during the sampling period. The sex ratio was found as 1/0.52. It was observed that the females and males were different in length and weight distributions. The length-weight relationship was obtained as W=0.0000188TL2.879 for all samples. The mean relative condition factor value was computed as 1.004 for all individuals. The otolith variables-fish measurements relationships were not different between right and left sides, and between female and male specimens. All regressions were highly significant (P<0.001, R2>0.84). Non-statistical differences were noted between the measured and predicted fish lengths and weights for each otolith variable. The mean values of form factor, aspect ratio, circularity, roundness, rectangularity, and ellipticity indices were calculated as 0.745, 1.333, 16.885, 0.755, 1.236, and 0.141, respectively. It was observed that form factor and roundness indices tend to decrease, whereas aspect ratio, circularity, rectangularity, and ellipticity indices tend to increase when the length, height, perimeter, and area of the otolith increase. As a result, it is understood that the otolith shape is species-specific and the size and weight of Caucasian Goby can be obtained reliably from the otolith measurements. Key Words: Caucasian Goby, Otolith biometry, Shape index, Terme Stream
