An Uncommon Presentation: Atypical Measles Syndrome

Abstract

Presented is a 7-year-old girl with fever, a nonproductive cough, dyspnea, and blisters. There were papulovesicular eruptions located on the whole body, especially the trunk and hands, and there was also edema on the hands. The chest X-ray revealed interstitial infiltrates. The diagnosis was established on a history of live measles vaccination administered at 5 years of age and serologic grounds. (Editor's note: according to IP reviewers, such vaccine has not been available in the US for approximately 30 years.) The patient recovered with supportive treatment and was discharged on the 28th day of hospitalization. We present an unusual case with atypical measles associated with pneumonia.
