Abstract

Knowledge of electromagnetic field variations in an electrical machine is very useful in the performance study of the machine, and in the determination of machine parameters depending on the dimensions, material characteristics and design specifications. Recent electrical machine design efforts include, as a significant element, numerical analysis based and computer aided determination of electromagnetic field particulars using software such as those on traveling waves, surface impedance, finite elements and finite differences, as a consequence of developments in computer hardware and software. In this study, two methods, namely the multilayer theory transfer matrix method and the finite element method have been employed to investigate the electromagnetic field and performance characteristics of solid steel rotor induction machine. The results obtained by these two methods have been compared to experimental results to assess the accuracy and performance of these methods.
