Publication: Yabancı Dilde Çevrimiçi Araştırma Yapan Öğrencilerin Yaşadığı Zorluklar, Çözüm Stratejileri ve Performansları
Abstract
This study aimed to examine the online learning experiences of individuals doing online research in a foreign language and to reveal a detailed pattern. A static group comparative design with control and experimental groups was used. Transcripts obtained from the screen recording and interview constituted the study data. These data contain both qualitative and quantitative data. Transcripts were first analyzed by content analysis. The contents are appropriately classified according to themes and categories. The sample of the study consists of participants who are studying at various state universities in Azerbaijan and Turkey or at the graduate level. The study was carried out with a total of 30 participants, 15 participants in the experimental group and 15 participants in the control group. Experimental and control groups differ in that the research is conducted in a foreign language and native language. In terms of language difference, both groups were subjected to the same task question. Although there was no significant difference between the groups in the use of keywords taken directly from the question sentence and produced with their own word combinations, unrelated keywords were used in the control group. There was no significant difference between groups in online resource preferences. The results of the study showed that there were differences in the research patterns between the groups. No significant difference was found between the groups in terms of research duration and number of steps. Language was observed not affecting the cognitive load during the Internet search. A significant and positive relationship was found between the number of research strategies and the duration of the research in the experimental group. In the control group, there was a significant and negative relationship between cognitive load and ICT use skill level, and a significant and positive relationship between the number of research strategies and the total number of resources used. A significant and positive relationship was also seen between the number of resources used and the number of steps in the control group. A significant and positive relationship was found between the number of steps and the duration of the study in both groups.
