Abstract
ABSTRACT THE COMPARISON OF THE EFFECTS OF PHASE CONTRAST VIDEO MICROSCOPY AND CONVENTIONAL METHOD IN ORAL HYGIENE TRAINING OF PATIENTS RECEIVING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT Purpose: With the introduction of modern technology, making use of visuality in education has reached the ultimate level. Today, giving only oral information and using a modal in the relationship between the patient and physician might remain insufficient. Having the patients watch bacterial plaque through phase contrast video techniques brings important contributions to training. The purpose of this study is to use such a technique for the first time in our country and to research its effects on trainings for raising awareness. Material and Method: 53 patients were included in our study regardless of gender. These patients were divided into two groups randomly. The first group was trained for oral hygiene only by conventional method, while the second group was trained by using conventional and phase contrast video microscopy methods together. Results: Plaque index scores decreased by 24% in Group 1 and 45% in Group 2 within the time from pre-training to 3 months after post-training and treatment and the difference was significant (p<0.001). In phase contrast group, while the number of microorganisms was 66.8, this number became 24.5 three months later. As for the conventional system, while the number of microorganisms was about 60.1 initially, this number became 33.0 in the third month after treatment. In the group that was trained with phase contrast video microscope, rate of microorganisms decreased more when compared with training by conventional methods in the third month. Conclusion: Using phase contrast microscope in oral hygiene education was found valuable and statistically significant Keywords: Conventional, Phase-Contrast, Oral Hygiene, Bacteria Plaque Mehmet Faruk KOCA, Ph.D.Thesis Ondokuz Mayis University - Samsun, April - 2015
