Abstract
Purpose: This study was conducted as a cross-sectional study to investigate the effects of healthy lifestyle behaviours on the life quality of individuals aged 65 and over who applied to the emergency service. Material and Method: The population of the study consisted of 206 elderly individuals who applied to Ondokuz Mayıs University Health Application and Research Centre between 05.11.2019 and 29.02.2020 and who had a Standardised Mini Mental Test score of 24 and higher. The data of the study were collected by using 'Descriptive Information Form', 'Healthy Lifestyle Behaviours Scale II' and 'Quality of Life Short Form SF-36'. The statistical analysis of the data was performed by using IBM SPSS V23 program. The data were analysed by using Kolmogorov Smirnov, Shapiro Wilk, t test, one-way ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis and Spearman Correlation analysis. Finding: 50,5% of the participants were women, while 49,5% were men and average age of the participants was 69 years. Healthy Lifestyle Behaviours Scale II total score of the participants was found as 133,2. Healthy lifestyle behaviours were found to be higher in participants who were married, those who were working, those who were living in nucleus families, those who were living with their spouses and those who did not have a chronic disease (p<0,05). The highest SF- 36 sub-dimension average score was found in social function sub-dimension with 60 ± 20,8, while the lowest average score was found in vitality sub-dimension with 38 ± 19,4. Result: It was found that quality of life increased in elderly individuals as their healthy lifestyle behaviours increased. It is recommended to raise awareness in the society about healthy life behaviours from an early age in both schools and through mass media. Key Words: Elderly; healthy lifestyle; old age; quality of life
