Abstract
In the study named ?Theological Discourses Which Justify Violence in Christianity? we examine the relationship between religion and violence by taking into account the fact that some Christian beliefs and dogmas have been used by Christians to justify their own violences towards the others. By doing this, our aim is not to show that Christianity itself is a violent religion, but its adherents misused their fatihs and dogmas in order to legitimate their violent activities. In this study we also want to demonstrate that some Christian dogmas such as atonment and christology have led Christians to do violence towards the others. Our study consists of three main chapters. In the first chapter we analysed some statements of the New Testament concerning violence. In the ssecond chapter we examined some factors which lead to violence and their reflections in the Gospel of Matthew. In the final chapter first of all we dealt with some Christian dogmas and beliefs such as atonment, classical christology and the theory of just war and then we tried to make clear how these doctrines have been used by Christians as source of violence. In the end of our study we reached the following conclusion: Religions don?t urge their follower to do violence. Followers of religions try to justify their violent activities by refering to their religious beliefs and doctrines. By taking into account this point we concluded that the source of violence in Christianity is the sacred texts and theological dogmas which have been produced during the process of insitutionalisaiton of Christianty after Jesus.
