Publication: Milli Birlik Komitesi'nde Yaşanan İhtilaflar
Abstract
Army and military service have always occupied a significant position in Turkish political life. The May 27 Military Intervention, which is one of the obvious examples of this, demonstrated the military's effectiveness in the political field. The National Unity Committee, which carried out the intervention, was composed of members who internalized very different worldviews and it was a community with mostly middle-level commissioned officers in terms of military hierarchy. For this reason, disaggrements emerged in almost every issue within the committee, from the first day of the intervention to the transfer of power to civil government. The disputes that occured in many issues ranging from the committee's term of office to the provisional constitution works, from officers and academics who were pensioned off to Yassıada trials and the executions made the committee nonfuctional after a while. The essential point of disagreement was whether the government would be run by the National Unity Committee or be left to the Republican People's Party (CHP). The 'radicals' led by Alparslan Türkeş did not agree fundamentally on this issue with other members of the committee and were eventually liquidated on 13 November 1960.
