Abstract
This study was carried out from 2011 to 2013 in the Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of grafting methods and times on graft success in potted walnut plant production. The study was carried out in the open field and under shaded greenhouse conditions. In the study, four grafting times (15 March, 5 April, 25 April and 15 May) and three grafting methods (chip budding, whip and tongue, Mr Cherny) were used. Grafts were performed with the scions of 'Chandler' cultivar on one year old J. regia seedlings. After grafting, graft union and scion was covered by parafilm and waterhold was spread to the top of the plant or scion. The highest graft success was obtained from whip (% 91.7-100) grafting method on 15 March- 25 April in the open field, 15 March- 5 April in the greenhouse. There was no statistical differences between open field and greenhouse conditions. It?s suggested that grafts can be done with whip and tongue method. Results show that whip grafting was the best method for potted walnut plant production and these grafts should be done when the mean temperature of 15 days reaches at 11.1±1.5°C in March or April and it should be ended when the rootstocks shoots reaches at 10 cm length. Key Words: whip grafting, Mr Cherny grafting, chip budding, potted plant, walnut
