Abstract
Objective:This study aimed to investigate the attitudes and practices of all physicians and family health personnel working in Family Health Centers in Samsun province regarding intimate partner violence against women. Materials and Methods: The population of this cross-sectional study consisted of all actively working Family Health Center physicians and Family Health Workers (nurses, midwives, and health officers) in Samsun. Without applying any sampling method, it was intended to reach all 861 active employees as of December 2023. The data collection phase of the study was completed with 690 participants between January 1 and July 31, 2024. Participants responded to a self-administered questionnaire that included a sociodemographic data form and the 'Attitudes and Practices of Healthcare Workers Regarding Intimate Partner Violence Against Women Scale.' The data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The average score of participants on the 'Attitudes and Practices of Healthcare Workers Regarding Intimate Partner Violence Against Women Scale' was found to be 116.3±13.6. A statistically significant difference was found between healthcare workers' attitudes and practices and their profession, as well as whether they had received training on violence against women during their education or professional life (p<0.05). No statistically significant differences were observed in terms of age, gender, educational level, region of work, years of experience, or whether the incident was reported to the police or social services (p>0.05). Among the participants' suggestions for preventing violence against women, the most common was increasing and enforcing criminal sanctions. Conclusion: Training played a determining role in healthcare workers' attitudes and practices regarding intimate partner violence against women. Therefore, training programs should be comprehensively designed to include recognizing signs of violence, effective communication strategies, and appropriate intervention measures.
