The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of then n-butyrate and I-glutamine enemas on mucosal inflammation and portal endotoxemia in experimental induced colitis. The etiology of the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is still unknown. Efforts in trial to describing the pathogenesis of IBD has recently increased. Some therapeutic modalities were developed during this experimental and clinical studies. Collitis was induced with 5% asetic acid enema in rats. Saline (n:10), n-butyrate (n:12), I-glutamine (n:12) enemas were applied twice daily to the rats for seven days after induction of colitis. Sham group (n:12) received only saline enema without induction of colitis. Rats were sacrified at the ences between colitis and treatment groups were insignificant. The level of colonic mucosal GSH and portal endotoxin of all groups were not statistically different. n-Butyrate enema reduces colonic inflammation macroscopically. As a result of this study, portal endotoxemia and colonic mucosal GSH level measurements are not reliable indicator in assessing the severity of inflammation in experimental induced colitis.en_US
