Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Öğrencilerinin Genel Empati Düzeyi İle Hekimlik Empati Becerileri Arasındaki İlişkinin Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Aım: In our study, it was aimed to evaluate the relationship between the general empathy level of Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine students and their physician empathy skills. Materıals And Methods: It is a cross-sectional study. 215 students studying at Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine participated in our study. Toronto Empathy Questionnaire (TEQ) was used to evaluate students' general empathy, and the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy (JSPE) was used to evaluate their physician empathy skills. Data were collected between June and August 2021. Results: The mean TEQ score of the students participating in our study was found to be 54.06±5.9. The TEQ score of women was significantly higher than that of men. The TEQ of the students who used alcohol and recreational drugs and experienced a negative event in the last year were found to be significantly lower. The TEQ scores of those who voluntarily chose the medical faculty were found to be significantly higher. The average JSPE score of the students participating in our study was found to be 106.8±14.81. The 1st grade had the highest (109.64±12.65) and the 6th grade had the lowest (101.26±15.30) JSPE mean score. When the classes were evaluated preclinically and clinically, a statistically significant difference was found in the JSPE score. There is a direct, weak-moderate and statistically significant correlation between TEQ and JSPE scores. Conclusıons: In our study, while the students' average JSPE scores were the highest in the 1st grade, they were the lowest in the 6th grade. Empathy is very important for both the patient and the physician. In medical students, it is very important to take care to ensure that they can empathize rather than lose empathy. Studies should be carried out to find the reason for this and more attention should be paid to this issue. Amaç: Çalışmamızda Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi öğrencilerinin genel empati düzeyi ile hekimlik empati becerileri arasındaki ilişkinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Kesitsel tipte bir çalışmadır. Çalışmamıza Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesinde eğitim görmekte olan 215 öğrenci katılmıştır. Öğrencilerin genel empatisini değerlendirmek için Toronto Empati Ölçeği(TEÖ), hekimlik empati becerilerini değerlendirmek için Jefferson Hekim Empati Ölçeği(JSPE) kullanılmıştır. Veriler Haziran-Ağustos 2021 tarihleri arasında toplanmıştır. Bulgular: Çalışmamıza katılan öğrencilerin ortalama TEÖ puanı 54,06±5,9 olarak bulundu. Kadınların TEÖ puanı erkeklere göre anlamlı derecede yüksekti. Alkol ve keyif verici madde kullananların, son bir yıl içinde olumsuz bir olay yaşayan öğrencilerin TEÖ anlamlı şekilde düşük bulunmuştur. Tıp fakültesini kendi isteyerek seçenlerin TEÖ puanı anlamlı derece yüksek bulunmuştur. Çalışmamıza katılan öğrencilerin JSPE puanı ortalaması 106,8±14,81 olarak bulundu. 1. sınıf en yüksek(109,64±12,65), 6. sınıf en düşük(101,26±15,30) JSPE puanortalamasına sahipti. Sınıflar preklinik ve klinik olarak değerlendirildiğinde JSPE puanında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulundu. TEÖ ile JSPE puanları arasında doğru yönlü, zayıf-orta kuvvette ve istatiksel olarak anlamlı korelasyon mevcuttur. Sonuç: Çalışmamızda öğrencilerin JSPE ortalama puanları 1. sınıfta en yüksek iken 6. sınıfta en düşük bulunmuştur. Empati hem hasta açısından hem de hekim açısından çok önemlidir. Tıp öğrencilerinde empatiyi kaybetmek yerine empati kurabilmelerini sağlamaya özen göstermek çok önemlidir. Bunun nedenini bulmaya yönelik çalışmalar yapılmalı ve bu konuya daha fazla özen gösterilmelidir.
