The Value of Bone Marrow Biopsy in the Diagnosis of Amyloidosis

Abstract

Biopsy of the involved organ is required for the diagnosis of amyloidosis and most common used tissues for biopsy are rectum and kidney. Bone marrow biopsy is an alternative diagnostic procedure for the diagnosis of amyloidosis. The value of bone marrow biopsy for the diagnosis of amyloidosis is discussed in this report. Amyloid was positive in 9 of 15 (60%) bone marrow biopsy in patients with amyloidosis. Bone marrow biopsy should be used initially for the diagnosis of amyloidosis in the patients with renal failure and respiratory distress.
