Jane Austen Romanlarında Kadın, Aile ve Toplumsal Cinsiyet

Abstract

Toplumu ve toplumsal normları anlamlandırabilmek için çeşitli çalışmalar yapılmaktadır. Ortaya çıkarılan edebi eserlerin toplumu ve yazıldığı dönemin insanlarını yansıttığı düşünülür. Bu sebeple toplumsal sorunların kökenine inmek, sebep ve sonuç ilişkisini anlamak ve çözümler üretebilmenin bir yolu da edebi eserlerin analizinden geçer. Kadın, aile ve toplumsal cinsiyet temalarının romanlarında inceleneceği yazar olan Jane Austen, İngiltere ile kalmayıp dünyanın her yerinde kendini duyurmuş bir yazardır. Eserlerinin günümüzde hala popüler olabilmesinin sebebi eserlerin içeriğinin aradan geçen yüzyıllara rağmen günümüz konuları ve sorunlarıyla alakalı kalabilmesidir. Romanlarında günlük yaşamdan olaylara yer veren Austen, dönemin kadınlarını, aile dinamiğini ve toplumsal cinsiyet yapısını detaylı bir şekilde betimler. Etrafındaki olayları ve insanları dikkatli bir şekilde gözlemleyen yazar, ironiyi kullanarak bir takım eleştirilerde bulunur. Yazarın kaleme aldığı ve incelenen Sense and Sensibility (Sağ Duyu ve Duyarlılık), Pride and Prejudice (Gurur ve Önyargı), Mansfield Park (Mansfield Parkı), Emma, Northanger Abbey (Northanger Manastırı) ve Persuasion (İkna) isimli altı romanı da ağırlıklı olarak bahsi geçen üç tema üzerinde ilerlemektedir. Romanlarda geçen olaylar ve karakterlerin tutum ve davranışlarıyla günümüz konuları ve sorunları arasında birçok ortak nokta bulundu. Toplumsal cinsiyet problemlerini örnekler üzerinden analizleri yapıldı ve ilgili çalışmalarla desteklendi. Çalışmamız içerik analizi yöntemiyle yapılan nitel bir çalışmadır. Çalışmanın amacı eser analizi yaparak sosyoloji biliminin irdelediği bazı konulara ışık tutmaktır. Sonuç olarak irdelenen konular ve sorunların aradan geçen yıllara ve gelişen toplumlara rağmen hala mevcut olduğu fikrine varıldı. Değişim ve gelişim adına yapılabilecek en önemli eylemin toplumsal cinsiyet eşitliğinin sağlanması olduğu anlaşıldı.Various studies are carried out to make sense of society and social norms. Literary works reflect the society and the people of the period in which they were written. For this reason, one way to get to the root of social problems, understand the cause and effect relationship, and produce solutions is through the analysis of literary works. Jane Austen, the author whose novels examine the themes of women, family and gender, is a writer who has made herself known not only in England but all over the world. The reason why her works are still popular until today is that the content of the works remains relevant to today's topics and problems despite the centuries that have passed. Austen, who includes events from daily life in her novels, describes the women of the period, family dynamics and gender structure in detail. The author, who carefully observes the events and people around her, makes some criticisms using irony. The six novels written and analyzed by the author, namely Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, are mainly progresses on the three themes mentioned. Many common points were found between the events and characters' attitudes and behaviors in the novels and today's issues and problems. Gender problems were analyzed through examples and supported by relevant studies. Our study is a qualitative study conducted using the content analysis method. The aim of the study is to shed light on some issues examined by the science of sociology by analyzing the work. As a result, it was concluded that the issues and problems examined still exist despite the passing years and developing societies. It has become clear that the most important action that can be taken for change and development is to ensure gender equality.
