Ölübaş (Mekik) Kelebeği, Celerio Euphorbiae L. (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae)'nin Besin Seçimine Etki Eden Kimyasal Faktörler

Abstract

Monofaj, herbivor bir kelebek olan Celerto euphorbiae L. larvaları, yalnız Euphorbia cinsine ait türlerle beslenirler. Euphorbia türleri arasında seçim yapmaları istendiğinde larvalar, Euphorbia rigida Bieb. türünü tercih etmektedirler. E. rigida yapraklarının sukkulentliği, yüksek besinsel değeri (kuru ağırlığının % 19 protein ve % 40 nişasta) ve düşük lif içeriği C. euphorbiae' mn besin seçiminde önemli faktörler olabilir. Bunlara ek olarak, Euphorbia türlerinin eterde eriyen, hidrofobik terpenoidlerini, larvalar, uygun bitkisel besinleri tanımada ve yerlerini belirlemede kullanmaktadır. Fakat, % 33 kadar yüksek bir protein içeriğine sahip marula E. rigida eter ekstraktı püskürtüldüğünde bile larvalar tarafından yenmemekledir. Kendi bitkisel besinlerini tanımada görev yapan kokulu maddelerden başka, kelebek larvalarının damak tadına etki eden diğer faktörlerde bulunmalıdır. Pup evresine girmeden önce, uygun ağırlığa erişmek ve besin depolamak için, larvalar besinlerini hızla tüketmektedirler. Fakat bu durum, Slansky ve Feeny *nin (1977) ileri sürdüğü gibi, besinlerin yaklaşık sindirilebilme oranının düşmesine sebep olur. C. euphorbiae larvalarıyla yapılan asimilasyon deneyleri bu hipotezi doğrulamaktadır. C. euphorbiae larvaları tarafından bitkisel besinlerindeki protein ve nişastayı sindirme oranlan sırasıyla % 37,3 ve % 66,7'dir. Bu değerler, larvaların yedikleri bitkisel besinler ile ürettikleri dışkıdaki toplam protein ve nişasta miktarları arasındaki yüzde fark olarak hesaplanmıştır.

The larvae of a monophagous, herbivorous butterfly Celerio euphorbiae L. feed on only the species belonging to the genus Euphorbia. When given a choice, among the Euphorbia members, they prefer the species Euphorbia rigida Bieb. The succulency and high nutrient (19 % total protein and 40 % starch by dry weight) and low fiber contents of E. rigida leaves could be important factors on the food choice of C. euphorbiae. In addition to this, the larvae use the ether soluble, hydrophobic terpenoids from Euphorbia species to identify and locate the adequate food plants. However, lettuce containing a total protein content as high as 33 % sprayed with ether extract of E. rigida could not be eaten by the larvae. Besides the olfactory cues to identify their own plant food, there must be other factors acting on the butterfly larval palate. The larvae consume their food rapidly in order to gain an adequate weight and the storage materials before going into pupal stage. But, this causes a decrease in the apparent digestibility of ingested foods as put forward by Slansky and Feeny (1977). Assimilation experiments done with the C. euphorbiae larvae has proven this hypothesis. The digestion ratios by the C. euphorbiae larvae of protein and starch in food plant, 37.3 % and 66.7 %, respectively, are calculated as per cent difference between the total protein and starch contents of the food plant eaten and the feces produced.
