Kingsley Amis'in Tepedekiler, Rus Kızı, İkisi Birden Olmaz Adlı Romanlarındaki Sözde Kahramanlar

Abstract

n ÖZET Kingsley Amis ilk romanlarını 19501er de yazmış ve bu romanlarının baş kişilerinin sözde kahraman (unheroic hero) olmaları nedeni ile 'Öfkeli Genç Adam' (Angry Young Men) akımına dahil edilmiştir. Ancak, 'Öfkeli Genç Adam' akımı 19501i yıllarda başlayan ve sona eren bir edebi akımdır. 1990 yıllarında artık bu akımdan bahsetmek mümkün değildir. Kingsley Amis bu akıma dahil edilmeyi ret etmiştir. Bu tezde, Kingsley Amis'in 19901ı yıllarda yazdığı son romanları olan The Folks That Live on the Hill, The Russian Girl ve You Can't Do Both çalışılmıştır. Bu tezin amacı Kingsley Amis'in son romanlarında da sözde kahramanlar (unheroic hero) yaratmağa devam ettiğini ortaya koymaktır. Bu tez giriş, üç ana bölüm ve sonuç bölümünden oluşmakta olup, giriş bölümünde İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonra İngiliz toplumunun ekonomik ve sosyal durumu hakkında bilgi verilmiş ve bu savaşın İngiliz edebiyatına etkileri üzerinde durulmuş ve 'Öfkeli Genç Adam' akımı hakkında genel bir bilgi sunulmuştur. Ana bölümlerde, romanlar yayınlanma tarihleri sırasına göre çalışılmıştır. Her bir bölümde amaç sözde kahraman tiplerini incelemektir. Samimiyetsizlik, beceriksizlik, ahlaksızlık, iki yüzlülük ve sorumsuzluk gibi sıfatların sözde kahraman tiplerinin ortak özellikleri olduğu görülmüştür. Bu çalışma ile şu sonuca varılmıştır: Kingsley Amis, kendisinin 'Öfkeli Genç Adam' akımına basitçe dahil edilemeyeceğini ispatlarcasına son romanlarında da sözde kahraman tiplemeleri yapmıştır. Bu tiplemeler de, Amis, geleneksel İngiliz romanı çizgisinde, toplumdaki yozlaşmalar ve ahlaki sorunlarla (moralist) ilgilenmiş ve bunu komedi aracılığı ile ifade etmiştir.

m ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to analyse the heroes in Kingsley Amis's novels in order to exhibit that Kingsley Amis creates his unheroic heroes disregarding the Angry Young Men movement which appeared in the 1950s. The novels studied are Amis's last novels written in the 1990s during which the Angry Young Men movement is not possible to be mentioned. The novels chosen for this thesis are The Folks That Live on the Hill, The Russian Girl, and You Can't Do Both. This thesis consists of an introduction, three main chapters and a conclusion. In the introduction, a brief information about the social and economic history of the post-war British society, and the effect of the Second World War on the literary life in England and a general background for the Angry Young Men movement are given. In the main chapters, the novels are studied according to the chronological order. In each chapter, the purpose is to search the unheroic heroes in the characterisation of the novel. Indecency, incompetence, immorality, hypocrisy and irresponsibility have been found being the typical characteristics of unheroic heroes. This study concludes that Kinsgley Amis continues on the depiction of unheroic heroes so as to verify that he is not a writer who can be simply included into the Angry Young Men movement. In the depiction of these character types, Amis mainly deals with morality which is conveyed through comedy in his novels.
