Abstract

Stoma is a surgical procedure in which the hollow viscus is anastomosed to the skin. They are classified according to the organ and the site, and can be permanent or temporary. Stomas have some complications including skin irritation, retraction, prolapse, and parastomal hernia. Patients' training and long-term care by experienced stoma therapists decrease the rate of complications and unpleasant side-effects of the stoma. In this review the stomas, their complications, and details of care of both the stoma and the stoma patient have been described.
