Abstract

Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and the deficiency of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses due to the increasing number of internet devices have brought the use of Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) with a larger addressing structure. Spectrum scarcity and inefficient spectrum using, as well as lack of address, is an important problem in the consumption of resources on the network. Cognitive Radio Networks (CRN) technology has been introduced in order to prevent these problems and to use the existing spectrum band more efficiently. With CRN, it is intended to be used by unlicensed users when there is no communication in the spectrum bands which are assigned to licensed users. Routing is vital to the communication of network devices. RPL algorithm is a routing protocol used in IoT networks. In this study, a CR-enabled routing function will be defined as an Objective Function (OF) on the RPL algorithm used for IoT devices. In the current IoT networks, devices communicate on a single frequency and do not perform the frequency switching function. The proposed routing objective function chooses the routing path, considering the switching cost. The proposed frequency switching aware RPL algorithm will be compared with the RPL (Pure RPL) in terms of performance metrics such as energy consumption and energy efficiency. © 2021 IEEE.
