Lace in Glass Art: Reinterpretation of Traditional Element

Abstract

Lace has long been existed as an aesthetically important value in our country and in the world. With its unique qualities such as sparsity-intensity and motif arrangements, it also manifests itself in recent artworks as it is employed by many artists from different fields and is interpreted with a new aesthetic approach. Especiallytoday, since the boundaries between art fields have blurred, this traditional element is reinterpreted in a unique way in the glass art and gains a new dimension to art. In this context, lace and its elements break the fixed materials and ideas and give way to collaboration and the use of different materials in artistic productions. However, the research through the written and digital sources has revealed thatthe lace elementthat is used in different fields of art has not been discussed in sufficient detail in especially the field of glass art and in the academic written sources of the field. This study aims to emphasize the place and importance of lace in glass art by addressing how it is reinterpreted and how a traditional element is combined with a contemporary material. Thus, it is aimed to reinterpretthe lace element by going beyond the traditional understanding in personal works and glass art works. Therefore, the study, "Lace in Glass Art: Reinterpretation of a Traditional Element" has been conducted in two dimensions as research and practice. The research section includes the definition and history of lace, its reflection in different fields of art with examples and its interaction with the art of glass. The practice section aims to emphasize the individual messages by shaping lace and lace-like elements as a form of expression through glass material. The study explores howthe lace element is reinterpreted in glass art and how atraditional element is integrated with a contemporary material and the interaction of lace with glass in terms of form, pattern and meaning, in detail.
