Objective: Meningiomas are the most common tumors of the central nervous system in adults, and have varying degrees of recurrence risk according to WHO (World Health Organization) grade. In this study, our aim is to review the clinical and pathological characteristics of meningiomas, which had been diagnosed in the largest tertiary referral hospital north of Turkey. In addition, investigated CD147 expression in meningiomas, and its association with tumor grade and recurrence. Material and Methods: The 311 primary meningiomas, diagnosed at the Ondokuz Mayis University Hospital, Department of Pathology between 2003-2012, were studied retrospectively and performed immunohistochemistry with CD147. Results: Of 311 meningioma cases, 223 (71.6%) were women and 88 (28.4%) were men. The age ranged from 8 to 92 years (median 55). By histomorphological reevaluation, it was determined that 267 cases (85.9%) were grade I, 39 cases were grade II (12.5%) and 5 cases (1.6%) were grade III. Tumor relapse had occurred in 29 cases (11,4%) of 254 cases which had follow-up. Positive staining for CD147 was observed in 73.5% of meningiomas. There was no significant differences in the CD147 staining between the histological grades (p=0.261). In addition, there was no significant differences with regard to CD147 staining between tumors that had recurrence or not (p=0.220) Conclusion: Our meningioma series is consistent with previous literature in terms of demographical data, WHO grade distribution and histopathological characteristics. Although some cases of meningiomas showed distinct expression of CD147, there were no significant correlations between CD147 expression and aggressive histological type and recurrence. © 2017 by Türkiye Klinikleri.en_US
