İngilizceyi Yabancı Dil Olarak Öğrenen Orta Düzeydeki Öğrencilere İngilizce Öğretiminde Şiir Kullanımı

Abstract

THE USE OF POETRY TO TEACH ENGLISH IN INTERMEDIATE LEVELFOR EFL STUDENTSDALGA ÖZALÖZETBu çalışma bildirişimsel-etkileşimsel bir çerçevede çağdaş ngiliz şiirinikullanarak geliştirilen aktivitelerin geleneksel öğretim yöntemleriylekarşılaştırıldığında ngilizceyi yabancı dil olarak öğrenen orta seviyedeki AnadoluLisesi dokuzuncu sınıf öğrencilerinin temel dil becerilerini geliştirmedekietkililiğini araştırdı. Ayrıca öğrencilerin okullardaki geleneksel dil öğretimyöntemlerine yaklaşımları ve şiir temelli öğretim sürecinin bu yaklaşım üzerindekietkileri de araştırıldı. Deneysel gruba şiir temelli aktiviteler uygulanarak yabancıdil öğretilirken kontrol grubuna geleneksel öğretim teknikleri uygulandı.Her iki gruptaki öğrencilere deney sürecinin başında ve sonunda öğrenciyaklaşımlarını araştıran birer anket verildi. Çalışma boyunca her iki gruba dagelişimlerini değerlendiren dörder sınav ve birer son sınav uygulandı. Anketlerdenelde edilen veriler bir istatistiksel analiz programı olan SPSS Pearson's Chi-Square testi ile sınavlardan elde edilen verilerse yine SPSS programında Levene'sT-test ile analiz edildi.statistiksel değerlendirme sonucunda, toplam olarak her sınavda iki gruparasında anlamlı fark bulunduğu görüldü. Anketlerden elde edilen bulgulara göreise deney sürecinin başında her iki grup da yabancı dil öğretimine karşı olumsuzdüşüncelere sahipken, çalışma sonunda deneysel grubun görüşlerinde olumluyönde anlamlı bir değişiklik olduğu saptandı.Yukarıda sözü edilen bulgular ve öğrenci davranışlarının gözlemlenmesisonucunda, şiir temelli aktivitelerin Anadolu liselerinde ngilizceyi yabancı dilolarak öğrenen orta seviyedeki dokuzuncu sınıf öğrencilerinin dört temel dilbecerisini geliştirmekte geleneksel öğretim yöntem ve tekniklerinden daha etkiliolduğu; öğrencilerin yabancı dil öğrenimine karşı olumlu bir tutum geliştirdiklerisöylenebilir.

THE USE OF POETRY TO TEACH ENGLISH IN INTERMEDIATE LEVELFOR EFL STUDENTSDALGA ÖZALABSTRACTThis study has investigated the effectiveness of poetry-based activitieswithin a communicative-interactive framework in comparison to traditionalmethods in developing the ninth-grader intermediate EFL students? majorlanguage skills at Anatolian High Schools. The students? attitudes toward thetraditional foreign language teaching methods at schools, and the effects ofexperimental period on them have been investigated as well. The experimentalgroup has been instructed through poetry-based activities while the control grouphas been instructed through traditional methods.To investigate the students? attitudes, both groups have been given a pre-questionnaire and a post-questionnaire. Throughout the study, both groups havebeen given four progress tests and a final test. The data gathered from thequestionnaires have been analysed with the Pearson?s Chi-square test in thestatistical analysis program SPSS. We have analysed the data gathered from alltests with the Levene?s T-test in the same program.As a result, statistically significant differences have been found between thetwo groups? tests scores. Considering the findings of the questionnaires, it has beenensured that although the both groups have had negative attitudes toward theforeign language teaching at the beginning of the study, a positive shift has beenobserved in the attitudes of the students in the experimental group at the end.Based upon above-mentioned findings and observations, poetry-basedactivities can be said to be more effective in developing the ninth-graderintermediate EFL students? major language skills than the traditional teachingmethods and techniques, and in developing positive attitudes toward foreignlanguage learning.
