Publication: Samsun'da Girişimcilik ve Yenilikçilik Ekosisteminde OMÜ Teknoloji Transfer Ofisi Etkisinin İncelenmesi
Abstract
This study aims to examine the impact of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Technology Transfer Office (TTO) in Samsun on entrepreneurship and innovation activities. The quantitative research method was used in the research. Academicians were chosen as the sample group due to its purposeful sampling method. An online survey was administered as the primary data collection tool. Accordingly, an online survey was conducted with 132 academics. In addition, TTO reports were considered secondary data sources and were used to support the survey findings, which are primary data sources. Academicians' interviews and observations were used as supporting data sources. Face-to-face interviews with purposefully selected successful academic entrepreneurs, observations, and experiences of the researcher in academic entrepreneurship activities were used to interpret all findings. Research data were presented with descriptive statistics using the SPSS statistical program. In testing the hypotheses, differences and relationships between variables were analyzed according to appropriate statistical methods, and the results were interpreted. As a result, it has been revealed that TTO has positively contributed to academic entrepreneurship and patents. Accordingly, scientists who participate in TTO activities, apply for projects and apply for patents with collaboration experience are more academic entrepreneurs. Those who participated in information and mentoring activities within TTO were more involved in academic entrepreneurship. It has been observed that among the academicians participating in TTO activities, mostly academicians in technical departments apply for patents. Commercialization of patents and the creation of revenue models emerge as factors that will increase academic patent studies. Additionally, the negative impact of the COVID-19 Global Pandemic has emerged on both entrepreneurship and patent application numbers. As a result, entrepreneurship activities should be increased, and more interaction and cooperation between the public and the university should be carried out in order to solve the problems revealed in the research or to take existing activities further. Other segments dealing with social, cultural, and artistic branches should also be included in entrepreneurial activities. Expanding this research regarding entrepreneurship and innovation studies in the TR83 Region provinces or throughout Turkey is necessary.
