Abstract

Granulocyte-macrophage-colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) not only influences the proliferation and differentiation of stem cells but also regulates other cells mediating inflammatory reactions and immune response. Accordingly, rhGM-CSF mouthwashes have been used for some years for the treatment of oral glossitis caused by radio- or chemotherapy. Based on these data we used topical rhGM-CSF in addition to parenteral antibiotic treatment in a preterm infant with glossitis due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We observed a quick healing of the tongue without any side effects.
