Abstract
The main purpose of the study was to explore the socio economic structure of aquaculture farms in Samsun. The research data were collected from 21 farms which constitute the total number of aquaculture farms through questionnaires in 2017. Besides, data from Samsun Directorate of Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock and Turkish Statistical Institute were used. When analyzing the economic performance of the sample farms, classical economic analysis approaches were followed. Fish costs were calculated by using alternative opportunity cost approach. Research results showed that economic performance of sample farms were satisfactory level. Economic and financial profitability ratios were 16% and 29%, respectively in Samsun. The profitability of sea farms was better than that of dam ones. Research results also showed that production cost of trout in dam and sea were 7,42 TL and 8,14 TL per kilogram, respectively. Regarding sea bass production, production cost per kg was 14,45 TL. Feed expense constitutes the biggest margin of farm expenses. While feed cost constituted %60,25 of total cost in dam farms, it constituted %46,28 in sea farms. It was determined that bass production in sea was 5 times more profitable than salmon production in sea when farms were compared according to their production place and profitability. High-level relation between profitability ratio of farms and capacity usage ratio and government supports was determined. If government supports are given in a way to enhance capacity usage ratio of farms, this may enhance profitability of farms. Moreover, study suggests that sea farms should only give weight to bass production. Key Words: trout, sea bass, socio-economic analysis, production cost, Samsun
