ABSTRACT THE EFFECT OF SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF ELDERLY INDIVIDUALS ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND SUCCESSFUL AGING LEVELS Edanur TOKUR Ondokuz Mayıs University Institute of Graduate Studies Department of Home Care Nursing Master, July/2024 Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Birsen ALTAY Aim: The purpose of the research is to determine the effect of some characteristics of elderly individuals on physical activity and successful aging levels. Material and Method: This research, planned in accordance with the principles of descriptive correlational research, was conducted with 211 individuals aged 65 and over who applied to the district state hospital of Gerze in Sinop. The research was conducted using the face-to-face survey method between July 2023 and January 2024. As data collection tools, an Survey Form to determine the socio-demographic characteristics of the individuals, the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE), and the Successful Aging Scale (SAS) were used to collect data. In the analysis of the data, descriptive statistics, t-test, One-Way ANOVA and Pearson Correlation analyses were used. Before starting the research, ethical committee approval and institutional permission from the relevant institution, and voluntary consent from the participants were obtained. Results: The average age of individuals aged 65 and over participating in the research was determined to be 72. 58.8% of the elderly are women, 41.2% are men, and 64.4% are primary school graduates. The average total score of the participants on the Successful Aging Scale (SAS) is 55.6±5.9; their average total score on the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) is 152.6±81.1. It was found that 48.9% of the elderly consider themselves to have sufficient physical strength when engaging in physical activity. The total subscale score of the women on the SAS/Healthy Living (17.5±1.6) was found to be significantly higher than that of the men (17.0±1.8). The total SAS scores of the elderly who stated that they had sufficient strength when engaging in physical activity were found to be higher (57.2±5.2). The total subscale score average of the elderly who rated their general health status as good (57.0±5.2), the total subscale score of Healthy Living (17.7±1.3), and the average subscale score of Coping with Problems (39.3±4.2) were found to be significantly higher (p<0.05). Conclusion: As a result of the research, some characteristics and health behaviors of elderly individuals were found to affect successful aging. It was determined that individuals who expressed that they found enough strength in themselves while doing physical activity had high successful aging scores.Women were found to have better healthy aging than men. The importance of place of residence in successful aging has been identified in the research. Keywords: Elderly, Physical Activity, Successful Ageing, Nurse.
