Publication: Ateş Şikayeti İle Acil Servise Getirilen 6 Ay- 5 Yaş Aralığındaki Çocukların Ebeveynlerinin Ateş Yönetimi İle Akılcı İlaç Kullanım Tutumları
Abstract
Objective: This study was conducted to determine the attitudes of parents who presented to the pediatric emergency department with a complaint of fever regarding fever management and rational drug use. Materials and Methods: This study, designed as a descriptive cross-sectional research, was conducted at the Hacettepe University Pediatric Emergency Department between April and October 2024. The study was conducted with 451 parents who had children aged between 6 months and 5 years and met the research inclusion criteria. Data were collected using the 'Parent-Child Identification Form,' the 'Parental Fever Management Scale,' and the 'Parental Attitude Scale Towards Rational Drug Use.' The data were analyzed using the SPSS 26 statistical software, employing descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U test, and Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: It was found that 58.1% of parents feared that their child would experience seizures during a fever episode, all parents reported using over-the-counter medications, and 77.2% used antipyretic drugs. The mean total score of the Parental Fever Management Scale (PFMS) was 11.85 ± 3.74, and the mean total score of the Parental Attitude Scale Towards Rational Drug Use (PASRDU) was 174.26 ± 18.12. A statistically significant weak negative correlation was found between the participants' education level and the total scores of the Parental Fever Management Scale (PFMS) and the Parental Attitude Scale Towards Rational Drug Use (PASRDU) (r:-0.268, p:0.000). Conclusion: It was determined that parents' level of fever management in their children was inadequate, whereas their attitudes toward rational drug use were found to be positive. The study demonstrated that as parents' fear and anxiety regarding fever decreased, their attitudes toward rational drug use became increasingly positive.
