Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine whether the products of children popular culture may be used in teaching English at primary schools and if it is possible, what language teaching techniques are more effective while using these products. A group of thirty-three sixth graders has been selected randomly and instructed for thirty-six class-hours of lessons using popular culture products. Before the instructions, the students have been given a questionnaire to investigate the popular culture products they like. The products have been chosen considering the questionnaire results and some criteria. During the instructions, two progress tests have been given, and they are compared both to each other and to the two progress tests of the previous term in which the students were not instructed with popular culture. The results have been analyzed through T-test, and it is found the second progress test of the experimental term is significantly different from all the progress tests given in the very year. This may illustrate that using the products of popular culture leads to a rising line of student progress and success in the progress tests. To evaluate the effectiveness of language teaching techniques, the students have been given questionnaires, and written some comments in their action logs. The results have demonstrated that free techniques are regarded to be the most difficult ones; however, the students have enjoyed creating their own products. Besides, the techniques requiring physical activities are liked more, and the techniques involving speaking and listening are preferred to the reading and writing ones. Moreover, it is found that popular culture products have increased the students? participation to the course. The disadvantage of some of the techniques is seen to be the possible noise. The study has illustrated that using different techniques with various popular culture products may be used to create a stress-free and entertaining teaching atmosphere.
