Publication: Which Antibiotoc Is Better to Select Empirically for Lower Urinary Tract Infections in Pregnant Women?

| dc.description.abstract | We evaluated the bacterial profiles and antibiotic sensitivities presenting in each trimester of pregnant women diagnosed with lower urinary tract infection. Escherichia coli was the most common isolated uropathogen (77.8%, 75%, and 52%, respectively), followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (0%, 3.6%, and 16%, respectively), and Enterococcus faecalis (3.7%, 14.3%, and 8%, respectively). Ciprofloxacin was found to have sensitivity for all uropathogens, with 92.8% sensitivity for Escherichia coli and 100% for Klebsiella pneumoniae. Norfloxacin also exhibited high sensitivity for almost all bacterial agents, except Acinetobacter baumannii, with 91.4% sensitivity for Escherichia coli and 100% for Klebsiella pneumoniae. Phosphomycin had the highest sensitivity, 100%, for the two most common uropathogens, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Because empirical antimicrobial choices play a critical role in the prevention of unwanted complications, lower urinary tract infection in pregnancy can be treated with empirically selected phosphomycin. | en_US |
