Abstract
In this study, the socio-economic characteristics of organic and conventional tea producers and the roles of men and women in tea production were examined and the innovation process of decision-making for organic producers was determined. The data were collected from 115 organic tea producers, which were determined by using simple random sampling method from the Rize province where the tea cultivation was made intensively. In addition, 50 randomly selected conventional tea producers were selected from the same region and interviewed. SPSS package was used to analyze the collected data. According to the results of the research, the age and agricultural experiences of organic tea producers were higher. On the other hand; gross total agricultural revenues were less than the conventional producers. The agricultural information sources of both groups of producers were similar; and the main source for most them was the agricultural engineers from ÇAYKUR. In both groups, women were actively involved in tea production. While women were mostly conducting fertilization and harvesting; the men were more involved in pruning and selling tea. In terms of adaption and conversion to organic production, the premium prices and marketing guarantee provided by were the main reasons together with health and environmental protection factors. The organic tea growers first learned the principles of organic tea cultivation at the village meetings organized by ÇAYKUR. The reason for the conventional producers to reject organic tea production was that their perception about the loss of yield and income during the process of conversion. Thus, conventional producers should be provided with extension and training activities such as village meetings and demonstration on organic tea cultivation, more informed about organic tea production and exchanged information between organic and conventional growers.
