Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the effects of foragespecies (legumes and grasses), storage types (drying and ensiling) andconcentrate sources (energy feeds and protein supplements) on in vitrogas production values, gas production parameters, organic matterdigestibilities (OMD), metabolizable energy (ME) and net energy lactation(NEL) contents of some feedstuffs. In this study, forages (corn hay-CH,corn silage-CS, grass hay-GH, grass silage-GS, alfalfa hay-AH, alfalfasilage-AS, vetch hay-VH, vetch silage-VS), energy feeds (barley-B, wheat-W, corn-C and triticale-T) and protein supplements (hazelnut kernel oilmeal-HKOM, canola meal-CM and soybean meal-SBM) were used. All of the feedstuffs were incubated for 3, 6, 9, 12,24, 48, 72 and 96 hours.Storage type was found to be effective the in vitro gas productionlevel and consequently hays had higher total gas production level, OMD,ME and NEL compared to silages which were made from the samematerial (P<0.01). Similarly, forage type affected total gas production,OMD, ME and NEL, and grasses had higher total gas production thanlegumes (P<0.05). On the contrary, gas production rate, OMD, ME and NELwere found higher for legumes compared to those found for grasses(P<0.01).Concentrate feed source affected in vitro gas production, ME,and NEL but not affected OMD, and energy feeds had higher gasproduction (P<0.01), gas production rate (P<0.01), ME and NEL contentsthan protein supplements (P<0.01).Key words: Ruminant, in vitro gas production technique, fermentation, silage, hay, concentrate feed, energy value, organic matter digestibility.
