Abstract
In this study, seasonal distribution of Rhizostoma pulmo medusae along the Samsun coast of the Black Sea was investigated between April 2008 and March 2010. Monthly abundance and biomass values and population parameters were detected for the R. pulmo medusae individuals distributed along the Samsun coast of the Black Sea, and their gastric contents were examined in order to determine the feeding dietary of this species. It was found that, temperature was one of the most important factors that effect the seasonal distribution of R. pulmo medusae. Due to the increase in temperature, the R. pulmo medusae that have been observed beginning from the end of summer have reached the highest abundance and biomass values in autumn. No R. pulmo medusae has been noticed in spring time. It has been possible to observe the R. pulmo medusae for five months for the first term of investigation period (2008-2009), and seven months for the second term (2009-2010). The highest abundance value was found to be 10 n/m2 (November 2008 and September 2009) and the highest biomass value was 12.587,5 g/100 m3 (October 2009).Captured R. pulmo medusae during the sampling period had varied between 15,6 - 49 cm in height, 14,5 - 42,5 cm in umbrella diameter, and 350 - 4.730 g in total weight. The relation between the umbrella diameter (cm) and wet weight (g) for the sampled Rhizostoma pulmo medusae was WW = 0,3676 L2,5471 and R² = 0,952.Gastric contents of total 231 R. pulmo medusae have been gathered during the sampling period from all stations. 31 taxa, 10 larvae, 2 nauplius and fish and Copepod eggs from 11 Phylum have been identified in the gastric contents of R. pulmo individuals. It has been detected that, feeding choices of R. pulmo individuals have differentiated and their food count has increased due to increasing umbrella diameter (according to Spearman rank correlation, r=0,70; p<0,05). It had been observed that taxa belonging to Crustacea (59 %; Copepoda 45,9 %) and Dinoflagellata (15,4 %) groups were densely present in the gastric contents gathered from R. pulmo medusae. The Phylum Ciliophora was another densely observed group in the gastric content of R. pulmo medusae, with a 7.2 % representation rate.Condition factor (KF) that has been calculated from the umbrella diameter and weight data of R. pulmo medusae have varied between 0,015 - 6,822 and the highest Condition factor has been observed in July 2009. According to data obtained from the regression analyses of umbrella diameter ? weight of R. pulmo medusae, R. pulmo displays negative allometric (b=2,547) growth. The present study which has been conducted in order to determine the ecology of R. pulmo medusae distributed along the Samsun coast of the Black Sea, it has been observed that temperature has an important role in the distribution of R. pulmo medusae. According to gastric content analyses, the feeding dietary of this species predominantly consists of Copepod and Dinoglagellat.
