Abstract

Species of the genus Hypericum have attracted scientific interest due to their variety of phytomedicinals and in vitro propagation has been reported as very useful tool in their multiplication and in studying their economically important secondary metabolites. The purpose of this study was to develop suitable media for callus induction in H. linarioides, H. lydum, H. origanifolium, H. venustum and H. scabrum. The seeds were surface sterilised and transferred to Murashige & Skoog basal medium supplemented with BA (benzyladenine) and 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) at different rates. Culturing seeds in BA and 2,4-D containing media resulted in green and friable callus induction. According to the results of ANOVA, the media supplemented with B A and 2,4-D in tried doses had a significant effect on callus induction and callus fresh weight depending on species.
