Abstract
This study was carried out in 2008 with the aim of determining phenological, morphological and agronomic characteristics of some annual medic species (Medicago hispida L., Medicago arabica L. and Medicago lupulina L.) grown naturally in Middle Black- Sea Region. In this study characteristics such as plant height, real plant height, growth pattern, branching pattern, leaf width, leaf length, hairiness of leaf face, first flowering date, fruit forming date, crude protein ratio, ADF ratio, NDF ratio, seed count in fruit and 1000-seed weight were investigated. In-species variations were determined among locations in terms of abovementioned characteristics.Plant height, natural plant height, leaf width, leaf length, crude protein ratio, ADF ratio, NDF ratio, seed count in fruit and 1000-seed weight were determined as 37.67-94.33 cm, 4.6-29.6 cm , 1.42-2.32 cm, 0.68-2.16 cm, 14.61-26.41%, 22.10-36.82%, 33.10-50.60%, 17-52 seeds and 1.12-4.21 gr, respectively in M. hispida L. Branching pattern was found as frequent and rare. There was no hairiness on leaf face in this species.Plant height, natural plant height, leaf width, leaf length, crude protein ratio, ADF ratio, NDF ratio, seed count in fruit and 1000-seed weight were determined as 25.00-81.67 cm, 6.8- 38.8 cm , 1.38-2.82 cm, 1.34-3.28 cm, 15-47-29.00%, 22.60-32.93%, 30.54-46.39%, 21-65 seeds and 1.68-3.58 gr, respectively in M. arabica L. Branching pattern and hairiness on leaf face were found as frequent and rare in this species.Inter-species differences indicated that there are genetic variations for these species in Middle Black- Sea Region. It was concluded that these species have genotypes which can be used in range improvement due to their potential of producing high quality hay.Key Words: Annual medicago, morphological characters, yield performance, genetic variation, Middle Black Sea Region
