dc.description.abstractIntroduction and purpose: Encephalopathy is the condition of dysfunction arising from the degeneration of brain's metabolism due to structural or non-structural reasons. Electroencephalography (EEG) is an important investigation used in diagnosis and follow up of brain disease with little significance in determining the etiology and it shows the functional state of the brain at the moment it is taken. The purpose of this study is to determine the etiology in patients whose EEGs show encephalopathic pattern. Patients and method: The EEG's of the patients who showed encephalopathic pattern between August 2008 and August 2012 in the Ondokuz Mayi{dotless}s University, Faculty of Medicine, Neurology EEG laboratory were searched and the etiological reasons, demographic properties, additional diseases and encephalopathic pattern types of the patients were examined retrospectively. Findings: 151 (4,5%) patients were included in the structural lesion group, 185 (5,5%) patients were included in the group without structural lesion and 12 (0,3%) patients were included in the periodic complex group. Patients with focal slowing formed the 89 (57,7%) of the structural lesion group while patients with diffuse slowing formed the 65 (42,3%). Patients with focal slowing formed the 62 (34%) of the group without structural lesion while patients with diffuse slowing formed the 120 (66%) of the group. In the structural lesion deceleration group, the most frequent etiologic reasons were stroke (37,7%) and tumor (27,1%) while epilepsy (37,8%) was the most frequent in non-structural lesion group. Death was seen most in the periodic complex group (66,7%), secondly in the non-structural diffuse deceleration group (18,3%) and lastly in the structural diffuse deceleration group (17,7%) Result: In the structural lesion deceleration group, the most frequent etiologic reasons were stroke and tumor while epilepsy was most frequent in non-structural lesion group. Death rate was high in the periodic complex pattern group. No significant relationship was found between EEG groups and etiology.en_US
