Abstract
Crop water stress index (CWSI) under greenhouse conditions was determined with infrared thermometers in present study. CWSI model for pepper was created by using plant energy balance and thermodynamic principles. Experiments were carried out during the summer of 2010 and effects of different irrigation water levels on pepper growth and yield were investigated. BafraDemre hybrid pepper cultivar was used as the plant material of experiments with four different irrigation treatments (S1-full irrigation; S2- 70% irrigation; S3-30% irrigation; S4-non irrigated). Leaf area index (LAI) and leaf moisture content (LMC) of treatments were observed. Plant cover ratio and air temperature differences (TcTa) were calculated to determine CWSI. While the highest yield was observed in S1 (3077.1 kg/da), it was followed by S2 (2532.5 kg/da), S3 (2329.5 kg/da) and S4 (1466.6 kg/da). High correlations were observed between yield and Tc-Ta and CWSI (r = 0.94, r = 0.93). A threshold value of 0.15 was recommended for CWSI of pepper under greenhouse conditions with drip irrigation. It was also proposed that irrigation scheduling and yield estimations might also be performed based on plant cover temperature-dependent indexes. Key Words: Pepper, plant water consumption, water deficit, plant water stress index, greenhouse, Samsun.
