Abstract
This study examines the mediating role of mindfulness in parenting, parental self-efficacy, and parental stress in the relationship between parental self-compassion and the parent-child relationship. It is known that parents' relationship with children during adolescence begins to change. The adolescent, who begins to distance himself from his parents due to the developmental processes that occur during adolescence, also builds a new identity. The changes experienced by the child during this process directly affect the parent and the relationship between them. Factors such as sudden emotional changes, establishing new social relationships, and gaining identity during adolescence may cause parents to have difficulty approaching their child during this period. It is known that parents of teenage children feel more inadequate and stressed about raising children and that their bond with the child is weakened. However, it is thought that parental self-compassion and mindfulness skills in parenting support the parent-child relationship. Therefore, it becomes important to consider the parent-child relationship from the parent's perspective during adolescence. Thus, the aim of this research is for parents who have children at the secondary school level; To determine the mediating role of self-compassion, mindfulness, self-efficacy, and stress levels in the parent-child relationship. The sample of the research consists of the parents of 532 students (Mother: 351, Father: 181) studying in 3 different secondary schools in the 2023-2024 academic year in the Atakum district of Samsun province. In the research, Hayes's mediation macro was used to test the theoretical model. According to the findings, it was determined that mindfulness in parenting, parental self-efficacy, and parental stress had a mediating role between parental self-compassion and positive parent-child relationships. Accordingly, the conscious awareness and self-efficacy of parents with high parental self-compassion increase, their stress decreases, and therefore the positive parent-child relationship increases. Additionally, the model explains approximately 41% of the variance in positive parent-child relationships. The findings obtained from the research were discussed and interpreted in the light of the literature and suggestions were made for researchers and practitioners.
